In an interview, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle emphasizes Germany’s special responsibility for the European Union and speaks about the EU’s new financial policy stability and the goal of a political union in Europe. After Germany’s first year as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council the German ambassador to the United Nations, Peter Wittig, presents a half-time summary of German involvement. At the Afghanistan Conference in Bonn in December 2011 the international community defined the course for international involvement in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of combat troops at the end of 2014.
